Nick Larsen Aside from how insanely impressive the performance is of every tune, the way Miles chose to record is brilliant. It feels exactly like sitting in a room in Brooklyn, listening to a great performer fill these compositions with personality, and very much with the spirit of Monk. Favorite track: In Walked Bud.
Loris Scirea
Loris Scirea thumbnail
Loris Scirea one of the definitive works on Monk, I should say essential. Great achievement.

Giles A truly epic undertaking, it would seem like all that solo guitar could get tiresome but it never does, because of the fascination of the arrangements and interpretations - it's consistent but not samey. And also an important development in the idea of 'jazz standards', what can be done with them and how they can or should be treated. Plus it's great to hear all the obscure Monk tunes I'd never come across!! Favorite track: Monk's Mood.
